Report from England Squash (East Area) 29th Nov 2010

This month saw over 200 junior’s battle it out for a top spot and coveted trophy, in the Tom Elton Barratt Junior Championships, hosted by Bishops Stortford Squash Club over a 3 day period. So large was the participation level that some games had to be played just down the road at Chantry Squash Club.

The East Region juniors didn’t just fair particularly well, in fact they did brilliantly as a group, with 3 winners out of a possible 10 and a couple near misses to boot. The numbers could have been better had there not been some unlucky draws. For instance Harry Taylor was knocked out by Richie Fallows, early on in the Boys U17 competition. The same went for Bryony Paczy-Smith who early on found an in form Anna Kimberley too hot to handle in the Girls U17. The unlucky draws continued as Sophie Lemom knocked out Brogan Lane in the Girls U19 with an excellent performance; Charlie Johnson continuing his good run of form knocking out Ross Brown, agonisingly in the semi final of the Boys U19; and finally, Elise Betts bumping into an ever improving Amber Marshall in the Girls U11.

However, the fellow compatriot knockouts were justified as those that progressed continued to play extremely well, with both Anna Kimberley (GU17) and Sophie Lemom (GU19) taking the top spots and winner’s trophy within their age category. The near misses came in the shape of Amber Marshall 2nd (GU11), Grace Gear 3rd (GU13), Billy Beecroft 3rd (BU11), Ritchie Fallows 2nd (BU17) and finally Charlie Johnson 2nd (BU19). The final winner was the non-stop bulldozing Elise Lazarus who scooped up the Girls U13 trophy to add to her already cluttered mantelpiece. A fantastic effort, well done and congratulations to the 3 winners and a great effort from those mentioned who no doubt on another day, could have also went home with a winners trophy.
