BISHOPS STORTFORD LOCAL NEWSPAER COVERAGE:
A step up in age group and class proved no barrier to highly-rated squash star Nick Mulvey who claimed silverware at the Hertfordshire Junior Open for the second year running. Nick had won the U-15 event last year as Bishop’s Stortford Squash Club once again staged this prestigious championship. Moving up to a stronger U-17’s category however did not deter him from clinching victory.
Seeded 3 for the tournament the Bishops Stortford High School student played brilliantly to defeat the number 2 seed Niall Engerer (Essex) 3-1 in the semi final. He then faced the number 1 seed and England number 6 Philip Waller (Hertfordshire) in the final. In front of a packed gallery of partisan supporters Nick pulled off a brilliant win to defeat Philip 3-2. His coach Lauren Selby was delighted with his victory. She said: “All his hard work in training and intelligent squash under pressure has paid off.” Nick travels to Birmingham next to represent the East Region in the Inter Regional Finals on 18th/19th April.
Nick’s final was one of a number of top matches at the Open, sponsored by Elms Stansted BMW, over the Easter weekend. This England Squash sanctioned tournament attracted more than 130 young players from across the UK who were hoping to gain national ranking points.
Competitors’ ages ranged from 7 to 16 years old and the Silver Leys club’s reputation of producing excellent young players continued with seven Stortford juniors entering.
Another player that impressed at the tournament was Stortford’s Charlie Johnson. He was unseeded for the U-17 event and reached the quarter finals with an excellent 3-1 win over 6th seed Richie Fallows (Essex) where he then lost to Will John (Bucks). Charlie is improving fast and is now preparing to travel to Holland for the Dutch Junior Open on 9th – 12th July. He will be accompanied by coach Lauren and a small squad of Stortford players.
Stortford’s girls also played well with Natasha Drake and Hannah Mulvey both finishing 4th in the U-15 and U-13 categories respectively. Other Stortford players were Oliver Rhoda and Matthew Griffith, both in the Boys U13 and Joseph Senior and William Johnson in the Boys U11.
Silver Leys was pleased to welcome England international Daryl Selby – the son of Bishop’s Stortford Squash Club manager Karen Selby - to present the prizes. Daryl has been selected to represent England in the forthcoming European Team Championships in Malmo, Sweden, on28th April – 2nd May.
A club spokeswoman added: “Daryl was very impressed by the standard of the squash at the Herts Junior Open and in particular with some of the very young players that were competing in their first tournament.”
Day Three
Boys under 17 No 2 Seed Niall Engerer falls to Stortford Player Nick Mulvey (3/4), Phillip Waller beats Will John, setting up a Waller / Mulvey Final!
Boys Under 11's first rounds are all completed, with playoffs booked for this afternoon (see link above).
Boys Under 15 Final sees the 2nd seed player fall, with 3/4 seed Angus Gillams through to play No 1 seed Ashley Davis.
Boys under 17, all 4 top seeds make it through to the Semi's. Matches started at 12:00 pm.
Day Two
Upset as BU17 5/8 seed Richie Fallows falls to unseeded local player Charlie Johnson. Some energetic dives and a few requests for lets on shots he could have played from Charlie almost looked as though they might stop the onlsaught, but he composed himself and produced his best shots to beat the on-form Fallows.
All Boys U15 first round matches are complete and up to date on line. 9/16 seed Joseph Green knocked out by Lalit Bose, 9/16 seed Kieran Arabaji knocked out by George Waller, all other seeds are through to round 2.
All Boys U13 second round matches are complete and up to date on line.
