A trip over to Stevenage to play the bottom team Herts Fire looked, on paper, a good chance for a win. Unfortunately on the night Herts Fire had a stronger lineup (their best of the season I think) and we ended up losing 1-4.....
Jeremy was up first at 5 against their lady player, Kim. Despite Jeremy admitting to nerves as he was expected to win easily, he went off like a train and duly won fairly easily 15-6 15-2 15-1 - 3-0.
On the other court Bob was up at 4 against arch-dropper Hugh (not wearing his pink shirt tonight!). The first and 2nd saw Bob dropped and lobbed to death 6-15 5-15. The third, after some advice from coach Cleary saw Bob take control for a 15-7 win but the 4th saw the dropper take control again and Bob lost 5-15 for a 1-3 loss.
Daren was next up at 3 against Pat who we were told had played at a much higher level but could no longer run! However his shots were of the highest calibre and Daren couldn' see where he was playing them. The first was close at 13-15 but the next 2 went quickly 7-15 7-15 for a 0-3 loss.
I was up at 2 against their skipper Paul. The first 2 could have gone either way but Paul just took them 15-17 and 16-18. The third saw me making too many errors and Paul's control was total - a 9-15 loss for a 0-3 loss.
Last up was Rob at 1 against Ed. The first was a cracker with some great rallies and Ed wresting control from Bob in the end for a 17-19 loss. The second was in similar vein but Rob went down 12-15. The 3rd saw Ed's movement about court give him the advantage and an 8-15 loss for a 0-3 loss.
A disappointing 1-4 loss for a 4-17 scoreline but the better team won on the night. We probably remain in 8th place.
Skipper Ian
