Bishops Stortford Squash Club – Mulvey’s double strike!

hertsbu19mulveyDuring January, February & March 2012, Bishop’s Stortford Squash Club has been running the 2012 Club Night Challenge tournament with the aim of encouraging all ages and abilities to take part in a fun squash tournament. During the 3 month event, played on every other Sunday, the club had over 30 people taking part, all with the possibility of winning the Club Night Challenge Trophy, due to the method of grouping competitors and then ‘handicapping’ finalists.

After 4 Sundays of the tournament, with the final night to go and any of the top 10 points scorers being able to win the Trophy, Andrew Mulvey, the Club’s very own manager! (pictured left with son Nick) came through to take the Trophy with a total of 280 points, closely followed by Andrew Cooke (279 points) and last year’s winner Peter Banhidai (262 points). Congratulations to all those that took part and the organisers can assure everyone reading this that it wasn’t a fix!

On the same day as the Club Night Challenge final, the Hertfordshire County Boys Under 19’s squash team, which includes Stortford’s Nick Mulvey (a previous Club Night Challenge winner), had earlier taken part in the England Squash & Racketball Inter-County Squash Finals in Surrey and for the first time ever for the U19’s team, Hertfordshire not only won the championships but finished without losing a single match all weekend, firstly in the Semi-Finals where they won 5-0 against Durham & Cleveland then in the Final itself, beating Yorkshire by the same 5-0 margin. This was Nick’s last competitive match as a junior since he has now turned 19 years old and joined the PSA (Professional Squash Association) to begin his life as a professional squash player. In his last month of being a junior he reached a ranking of 4 in England.
