(Trophies presented by Kath Kemp – Committee Member)
John McFarlane collected 3 titles at the recent club championships despite being a fair few years past 21 he showed his opponents that he still had the skill and fitness to keep the contenders at bay! John won the Men’s A event, the O35’s and the O45’s , due to some unforeseen circumstances and fortunately for John, only one of the 3 finals was actually played on Finals Night, Fred Cooke was John’s opponent in the O35’s final which was the last match of a good evening.
The Men’s A Plate Final was hotly contested match between 3rd Team Captain John Goodfellow and Richard Griffith. Richard’s slightly younger legs carried him through for the victory 3-1!
The Men’s B Final between Steve Howe and Adam Wilder was another excellent game which could have gone to either player, at one game all the 3rd game was crucially won 12/10 by Steve who went on to win the 4th game and the title.
The Men’s B Plate Final was a very good game to watch with some excellent rallies, on this occasion the younger legs of James Issako just weren’t quite fast enough to defeat Jeremy Smith who won in a close 3/0
There was a new name on the O55 trophy this year – Graham Evans, despite a very close 2nd game 13/11 Graham proved to be just a bit too strong for runner up Doug Sandford, 3/0 being eventual score.
Paul McCartney managed to reach the final of both the O45 and O55 Plates. Luckily for Paul the O55 Plate final was played a day early with club Chairman Dave Sciberras collecting that trophy. Paul was obviously saving his energy for the O45 Plate final against Derek Bayliss, this proved to be an epic match. Paul was 2/0 up and looking certain of victory until Derek began to turn the tables and clawed back the next 2 games, the 5th game was close but after some very long rallies Paul clinched the match 11/7.
The O35 Plate Final was played between Ian Smith and dark horse Mark Albright. Mark will tell you that he hasn’t played for years and really isn’t that good but what he won’t tell you is that when he did play as a junior he regularly attended England National Squads!! The years may have moved on a little but Mark still has an abundance of racket skills and despite a very close 2nd game 12/10 these proved too much for fast improving Ian.
The Ladies final between Kath Kemp and Brogan Lane will be held at a later date, Brogan has had an extremely successful and busy year (she recently earned her first England U15 Caps) and was once again competing on the European Junior Circuit and couldn’t make the finals night.
The Main Junior Final also had to be delayed because another of our junior stars was also playing in Germany.
The final was eventually held as part of the last Junior Morning of the season on Saturday 18th July.
The match between Nick Mulvey and Charlie Johnson was a great show case for the club and our junior squash, the rallies were long and full of excitement. Nick was just that bit too strong for Charlie and he finally won 3/1.
