Club Night Challenge Winner 2008/9

Steve HoweThe big question on everyone’s lips last Sunday was ‘could Steve Howe keep his composure and play well enough to take this year’s Club Night Challenge trophy?’

17 players contested this months round, including the only person capable of now beating Steve……the mighty Chris Wearden.

Chris started well by beating Ingo Kelling in the opening round. Steve on the other hand didn’t get off to the best of starts by managing to lose his first two matches. Was a last minute upset on the cards? A quick calculation of the points available by the organizers showed that we needed about another 4 players in the tournament to push everything to the wire. It was therefore decided to go out onto the streets to find anyone else we could to make the final even more interesting. Unfortunately the Bar got in the way, we stopped off for a pint and that was the end of that idea!

After a number of entertaining matches, Steve was officially crowned the winner despite finishing half way down the field at the end of the night. Chris collected a very worthy second place.

The final on the night (Round 6) was a fiercely contested match within the Lane family (Brogan v Fred), the handicapping system working a treat with the result hanging on the very last rally. Fred just taking this to finish on a 15-14 score line – A fantastic match watched by many spectators.

  • Winner - Steve Howe
  • Runner Up - Chris Wearden
  • Joint 3rd - Jake Byrne / Hannah Mulvey
  • 5th - Gabby Stevens

Hannah MulveyA special mention should go to Hannah Mulvey who, apart from the Steve Howe, was the only player who managed to attend all of the Challenges! Many thanks must also go to Karen & Paul Selby (Off the Wall Sports) who donated the prize of a Harrow Squash shirt to the winner. They also donated other miscellaneous prizes. The trophy was presented by last year’s winner, Nick Mulvey.

If anyone has any comments to make or ideas about about how we could run future Club Night Challenges, please let Andrew Mulvey or Mark Mallison know. The format can easily be changed as people wish.

On-Line League System will be the only score that counts from Oct 1st!

As you will hopefully be aware, we have now been running the leagues On-Line since June 2009 and it has proved to be extremely successful, with a large proportion of members now entering their scores on-line as well as on the main board in the club.
