Stortford Juniors excel in Manchester !
The British Junior Squash Championships took place at the weekend and 5 of Stortford’s top juniors took part and played very well.
Hannah Mulvey is fast improving and gave an excellent account of herself in the Girls U13
Big bother Nick had a tough draw meeting the No.1 seed James Earles from Yorkshire in the second round of the Boys U17, he played well but James was just too strong. Nick went on to win all of his remaining games convincingly and finished a very impressive 9th.
Tim Dixon and Charlie Johnson were both competing in the Boys U19, Tim had also drawn a very difficult first round against Hertfordshire Junior Champion Philip Waller, Tim pushed Philip really hard eventually losing 12/10 in the forth game 3/1 the final score. Tim continued to turn his next three plate matches into a marathons, eventually beating Guy Pearson from Warwickshire to win the Plate.
Charlie Johnson, a relative novice to the tournament circuit has amazed everyone with his remarkable improvement in the 3 years since he started playing, had to qualify for the main draw in the Championships only to meet 3 – 4 seed Ben Rogers from Devon, he played really well but went down 3/0.
The Stortford Star this weekend was without doubt Brogan Lane . In her first season at under 17 Brogan was seeded 9-16 for the tournament, in the second round she faced the 3-4 seed Jade Thompson from Yorkshire , Brogan caused a major upset and beat her 3-0. She then went on to beat to more higher ranked players to set herself up for a place in the British U17 Girls Final and although she lost 3-0 she made Emily Whitlock from Cheshire fight for every point, the first game was 11-9 and could easily have gone either way. This is a fabulous achievement for Brogan and if she continues to work hard and improve as she has done recently she will hopefully go one better next year!

Brogan Lane reaches her first British Championships final
Stortford’s top junior girl Brogan Lane stormed her way to the final of the British Junior Championships.

brogan_laneSeeded 9/16 in the under 17 girl’s draw, Brogan firstly knocked out the ¾ seed Jade Thompson (Yorkshire) then faced her old adversary 5/8 seed Victoria Temple Murray (Devon). Initially, it was a close game but once Brogan took a 2/1 lead, Victoria seemed to make a lot of unforced errors and Brogan eventually took the fourth to book her place in the semi-final against the top Welsh player, Hannah Davies. They fought it out on the all-glass court. Brogan seemed more confident and comfortable on the exhibition court than Hannah and the match was pretty one sided as Hanna Struggled to find the form needed to challenge Brogan. The final score was 3/0 in 25 minutes and Brogan had booked her place in first ever national.

Her opponent, Emily Whitlock the top seed and one of the strongest junior girls in the country was always going to be a tough final. Brogan fought hard and a 9/10 down could have evened the score but failed to pick up a low cross-court drive from Emily and dropped the first game. Although Brogan challenged all the way, Emily proved to be too consistent on the day and took the match in 28 minutes.
This was her first year at U17’s so has the chance to take the title next year.

The summer training and recent introduction of Paul Carter, the new regional coach has helped build up Brogan’s confidence. And with Becky and Fred’s hard fitness regimes, she was ideally prepared for this one.
Next up is Belgium Junior Open, a Super Series event in Herentals 5-8th November where Brogan will try her hand at U19’s to begin preparing for the British Junior Open in January.

We are pleased to confirm that as from 1st July 2010 Andrew Mulvey has officially been appointed the club’s new manager, having taken over the position from Karen Selby.

Although this is a complete change of direction for him (having worked for the same Investment Management Company for the past 23 years turning his hand to many different tasks along the way), in his “spare time” he has been very actively involved in the squash world.
