Selby Sizzles in Vancouver Bishop's Stortford player and world number 33 Daryl Selby clinched his seventh PSA tour title with victory over the fast rising Egyptian star, Tarek Momen, in the final of the 2009 Comfort Inn Open, presented by Odlum Brown Limited that was played at the Evergreen Squash Club on Vancouver’s North Shore.

Both had victories yesterday over the top two seeds in the semis and this final was eagerly anticipated due to their contrasting styles. Selby seems to be a “meat and potatoes” player who retrieves extremely well, constantly plays penetrating length and takes few chances. Momen, on the other hand, is also an outstanding retriever but is much more offensively minded and much more inclined to play the risky shot.

He showed off an array of precise volley drops to each corner from high on his backhand and volley boasts off his forehand that frequently had Selby taking a step in the wrong direction before recovering. Momen’s shots were on the money for the most part and he closed the first game 11-4.

The disagreements with the officiating continued and Selby seemed to better regain his focus.
He settled into a nice rhythm and continued his steady, retrieving, length oriented game. Momen, on the other hand, seemed to have lost his way with many unforced errors creeping into his game which proved fatal. As a result, Selby cruised to an 11-2, 11-3 last two games for the 3-1 win and the title.

So, a tip of the hat to a pair of squash players who endeared themselves to the galleries all throughout the tournament – and, who are a real credit to the game. Selby was full value for the win and should feel proud of his accomplishment. As for Momen, the first PSA victory cannot be far away and when that comes one might see an avalanche of victories thereafter.

Looking forward to next year!!!!
