HERTS JUNIOR OPEN

Easter weekend saw the club alive with over 135 entrants from Scotland to Guernsey. Although the number of entrants was down on the last couple of years owing to England Squash’s policy of rotating the ranking status awarded to events, the club’s reputation still attracted many of the countries top juniors ensuring the quality of the tournament and standard of play was just as outstanding. Having won the under 15’s at last year’s HJO Stortford’s Nick Mulvey, seeded 3,  was ready to give it his all in the under 17’s category at this year’s event and we weren’t disappointed. Causing an upset in the semi finals beating the number 2 seed, Niall Engerer 3-1, he then went on to pull off a brilliant 3-2 victory over England number 6 and number 1 seed Philip Waller in the final in front of a packed gallery.

ImageCharlie Johnson also had an impressive tournament with an excellent win over 6th seed Ritchie Fallows before losing to Will John in the quarter finals. Stortford girls Natasha Drake and Hannah Mulvey both finished 4th in their relative age groups, whilst our up and coming contingent of younger boys – Matthew Griffith, Oliver Rhoda, Joseph Senior and William Johnson all performed exceptionally well gaining invaluable experience along the way. For a full listing of all the results please see our website www.stortfordsquash.co.uk

JUNIOR RESULTS

Well done Brogan Lane who beat Labhaoise Dunbar of Ireland 3-0 and Fiona Murphy of Wales 3-1 whilst representing England in the U15’s Home Internationals. Brogan’s winning streak continued when the following weekend she won the GU17’s at the Gloucestershire Junior Open while Nick Mulvey finished 3rd in the boys’ event.
In the last Grand Prix, an England Squash invitation only gold event, Tim Dixon won the U17’s with Nick finishing 3rd having lost to Tim in the semis, Brogan also finished 3rd in the girls draw.
Tim and Nick must also be congratulated on their selection for the England Squash Super Squads in Birmingham later this month. Selection for these squads is made by the ES coaches and is based upon performance and results rather than just rankings.

INTER COUNTY and AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The under 17’s Herts County team, with 3 of the 5  boys from Stortford – Tim, Nick and debut from Charlie Johnson faced some strong competition in their semi final against Gloucestershire. Despite some sterling performances and 2 matches going the full distance a 5-0 defeat put them in the 3/4 playoffs where the result was reversed when they convincingly overcame Sussex 5-0. Tim, Nick and Brogan were also selected to represent the East Area at the Inter Area Championships in Birmingham a couple of weeks later where all 3, along with their fellow team mates, walked away with gold medals.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

Last Saturday it was a pleasure to welcome George Atterbury and a team of boys from Saffron Walden. The junior section at Saffron has only recently been formed as the result of the hard work of George who several of you will remember as a coach at our own junior morning before he left to start this new venture. We hope that his success will continue to grow and look forward to many more enjoyable events like this. Many thanks to Richard Griffith for running the afternoon. On the subject of friendly fixtures, the summer term is traditionally when we try to bring together clubs from surrounding areas and we hope this year will be no exception.

HERTS LEAGUE

Congratulations to our two teams who played in the Herts League this season both of whom won their relative leagues, our under 11’s boys took the division 2 and the under 19’s finished top of the division 1.

MADNESS ALL IN A GOOD CAUSE!

Congratulations to club members Matt Rhoda and Glenn McClelland who following months of training, ran the Flora London Marathon. Coming home just 20 minutes apart – Matt in 4 hour 28 mins and Glenn in 4 hours 50 mins they raised thousands of pounds for their relative charities – Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Emmaus, charity for the homeless, It’s not too late if you would like to make a donation which may be made on line at: http://www.justgiving.com/matthewrhoda and http://www.justgiving.com/glennmcClelland

Several club members are about to embark on other challenges for various good causes, if you would like to make a donation, details are below, every contribution helps, no matter how small. Later this month Matt Delaney will be running the Hatfield Broad Oak 10K in memory of his friend Tina Canning and to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. http://www.justgiving.com/mattdelaney . Anton, one of the countries top chefs and chef patron at Anton’s Restaurant, Great Hallingbury Manor, will be raffling himself to come and cook for you in your own home. Raffle tickets will be available from the bar very soon.

JUNIOR COMMITTEE VACANCY

A vacancy has arisen on the Stortford junior committee. The committee was formed 18 months ago by the juniors with the purpose of giving them a voice both within the Club and the County. Their opinions are valued and form an important contribution to both.  All junior members are eligible to stand for election. If you would like to be considered or would like some more information, please contact Karen, Catherine or any of the committee members.

TESCO VOUCHERS

The Tesco for Schools and Clubs Scheme still has another month to run so please carry on collecting! It’s not very often that clubs are included in these supermarket schemes and it is a great way of getting more equipment that doesn’t cost us anything. In comparison to local schools we are very small, making your contribution to the scheme even more important. For every £10 spent in store or petrol station you receive 1 voucher, which we in turn can exchange for sports equipment. So please do say yes when offered the vouchers and pop them in the box on the bar. The more we collect the more equipment we can get for the club. Thank you.

HOLIDAY CAMPS

Following the success of our Easter squash camps, Lauren will be holding further courses during the summer holidays so look out for full details of these over the next few weeks. We would also welcome any feedback to help us with the planning of these courses.

The BIGGEST event of the year here so far in the East is coming - The England Squash Junior Regional Closed Championships 2010

This year’s extravaganza will be held on 11th & 12th September 2010 at Bishop’s Stortford Squash Club and will be run completely by England Squash regional office staff.

NEW to this year’s event will be the inclusion of the under 19’s, allowing those who may have thought they would miss out due to age, to try their hand again.
