Pioneer Junior Squash Cup, Dutch Junior Open July 2007

Boys and Girls - All age groups

Oliver Dixon and Brogan Lane head out to compete in two tournaments on the European Junior Tour. As the season draws to an end for England Squash Junior events, the European Tour is in full swing continuing its summer programme with the Pioneer Cup in Cologne, Germany between 6-9 Jul followed by the and the Dutch Open in Amsterdam.

For up to date progress reports on the entry lists, seedings and results visit the following websites:-

Pioneer Junior Squash Cup - Cologne

Dutch Junior Open - Amsterdam

Tournaments run for 4 days with competitors from all parts of the world including the renowned Egyptians and a huge contingent from the USA. The arrival of the Americans on this tour demonstrates how seriously the sport is now being taken across the world especially at junior level.

Oliver Dixon is now reached the coveted position of England No1 at U17 after a gruelling season combining training with studying school for key exams. Since linking up with John Milton, UK Squash Academy and continued support from the club through tournaments and sparring partners, Oliver has discovered that X Factor and has become a dominant top quality English Junior player. However, he has rarely competed on the European circuit this season and arrives unseeded in these two top Super Series events. But he relishes in the thought and comments ‘I’m the dark horse but ready to show what I can do against the best in the world.’

Brogan completed her English Junior Circuit finishing ranked No2 at U13 but unlike Oliver has competed regularly in the European tour reaching the top 20 in Europe. In the coming weeks she is competing at the higher age group U15’s and any progress past round one will be a huge achievement as she becomes accustomed to the next level.

As they arrive in Germany, there is no pampering with air conditioned hotels and restaurant cuisine. Camping outside the venue will keep them focussed and fit. Good luck to you both.

Pioneer Junior Cup: update 7th July

Both Oli and Brogan have prepared well and performed at the top of their game going into the Pioneer Cup.

Oli broke through the No 12 seed Mahammad Harb from Jordan in an epic 5 set match. Having won the first 2 games, Oli allowed Mahammad to come back with his relentless retrieving of anything Oli put to him. Oli's tactics of short rallies and shot making was not working. However, he gained sufficient composure in the 5th and along with his new-found stamina and changed tactics, managed to grind out a superb win in the 5th in front of a huge crowd.

In the second round Oli despatched Geoffrey Demont (Fra) using his patient tactics and employing a simple game with few errors. The tough standard demanded by the tournament had taken its toll on Oli as he has struggled with a thigh strain as well as general tiredness. He decided to continue on in the last 16 but struggled against the German No2, Rudi Rohmuller, who's attack/ volley game overpowered Oli. Although Oli was ahead in the 3rd, he simply unable to close out the third and eventually lost 9/6 in the third. From here on, Oli progresses to places 9/12 after beating Phillip Bull (Eng) in 5.

Brogan also progressed past the first round with a great win over Elizabeth Morris (USA) with a 3/0 win in style. Her serve and return of serve game contained the big hitter from the States who simply struggled to get to terms with Brogan.

The second round saw Brogan play the French No2 Helene Muzi Cohan who was too strong and skilful for Brogan but nevertheless Brogan´s fitness and willingness to rally realised good points especially in the 3rd.

She has now progressed to play for positions 17-20 by despatching Millie Jensen (Den) 3/0 and the one of the favourite Egyptians Sherouk Omar 3/1. Her game has improved throughout the tournament and she now faces the USA No2, Libby Eyre which will be another tough challenge.

As the tournament now reaches the Semi Final stages with all big guns firing, the match of the tournament so far was Adrian Wallers´s destruction of the top seeds Kristian Frost Olesen (Den) in the last 16 and Karin Samy El Dabaar (Egy) in the quarter final.

His cool resilience and ability to change tactics when needed, made it impossible for him to be broken down. Most impressive of all was how tired both opponents seemed at the end of their matches relative to Adrian.

He is now set up for another great battle with the French No1 Gregoirie Marche from France in the Semis.

Hertfordshire Junior Closed, October 2006

Boys and Girls - All age groups

We had a record number of 19 juniors across the age groups entering this year’s Herts Closed Competitions, several of who entered more than one age category. Success was abound claiming 10 top 5 places overall and with this being 50:50 to the girls and boys shows what a solid mixed sex junior section we have.

UNDER 11’S - Hannah Mulvey and Daisy Moore were our two entrants in the under 11’s event. This took the round robin format, 1 game to 15. Narrowly missing out on the 3/4 playoff by 1 point Hannah finished 5th with Daisy taking 7th position.

UNDER 13’S - This was the first Herts Closed competition for three of our boys and so were placed in the “B” half of the 32 draw. Well done to Mathew Moore who finished 16th, Ed Lawson, 24th and Duncan Maclachlan 28th.

In the girl’s competition Brogan Lane became Hertfordshire’s under 13 girls champion after beating Cannons’ Jessica Foster in the final and Natasha Drake overcame fellow Stortford team mate Ashleigh Booth in the 3/4 playoff, whilst Zoe Wearden finished 7th.

UNDER 15’S - In the “A” draw a thrilling 5 gamer between Tim Dixon and Nicholas Mulvey in the 3/4 playoff had everyone entertained with Tim eventually coming through after almost an hour on court. James Grimston went through to the semi finals of the plate before going out to Gosling’s Johnny McElligott whilst Alex Pleasance in the “B” draw finished 29th in his first Closed competition.

Brogan and Ashleigh also entered the under 15’s girls and finished 2nd and 8th respectively.

UNDER 17’S - In the “A” draw Will Blower and Alastair Booth took the 3rd and 5th positions, whilst in the “B” draw 20th, 21st and 22nd places went to Chris Wearden, James Morris and Jake Byrne with Adam Wilkinson at 33.

UNDER 19’s - In a repeat of last year’s playoff Oliver Dixon beat Gosling’s Rhys Thomas for 3rd position. Will and Alastair were in action again to take the 8th and 10th slots.

Well done to everyone who competed, some great results and once again our players were praised for their fair play and conduct. One initially reluctant “volunteer” even commented how much he had enjoyed marking a very close match between two of our juniors and what a credit to the sport (and club) they had been.
